Over the course of this year, I’ve been stuck at home, which means I’ve spent a lot of time playing games on Nintendo Switch. If you spend a lot of time with Switch games these days, chances are you’ll want to take some screenshots and share them with friends. It could be defeating Ganon in BoTW, or an awesome squad cleanup in Fortnite. Well, if you want to share your best Switch moments, here’s how to take and send Nintendo Switch screenshots to your phone.

In my experience, sharing screenshots from the Switch used to not be very easy. You had to upload images to Facebook or insert a microSD card to copy images and all that. Also, taking screenshots is also not very intuitive because the button doesn’t appear to be a screenshot button. But that’s what it is.

In this article, I will show you how to take a screenshot on your Nintendo Switch and how to send the screenshot from the Switch to your phone. You can use the table of contents below to jump to any section you like.

1. How to take screenshots on Nintendo Switch

Taking a screenshot of the Switch is easy once you know which button to use. See how you can capture the screen on your Switch with ease.

When you’re in a game and want to capture a screenshot, just press the square button on the left Joy-con which has a small circle engraved inside. This is the capture button.

After pressing it, you will be notified on the screen that a screenshot has been taken. You can also press and hold the button to screen record a clip on the Switch.

2. Where can I find screenshots of the switch?

Now that you have the screenshot you want to share, where exactly can you find it in the console?

On the Switch home screen, you’ll see an album icon on the bottom row next to the Settings, Nintendo eShop, and News icons. Tap it to open the album.

Here you can see all your screenshots and clips. You can select any of them and open them to see them in full size.

3. How to send switch screenshots directly to phone

Now let’s talk about how to share these screenshots on your smartphone. This hasn’t been easy for a while, but Nintendo has updated the Switch’s software to add a new feature that’s really useful for sharing screenshots. Here’s how to use it.

  • Open a screenshot you want to share and press the A button on the Joy-con.
  • In the menu that appears, select ‘Send to Smartphone’.

  • Select ‘Only this one’ if you just want to upload a screenshot or select ‘Submit a batch’ to share multiple screenshots.
  • Scan the QR code shown on the left side of the Switch. This will connect your smartphone to the Switch’s WiFi network.

  • Now scan the QR code shown on the right side. This will open your browser and show you the shared screenshots.
